Artist Statement

Throughout my life I've never been completely grounded in the world except when I am
creating. Creating my artwork has been a place where I have branched out, explored myself, and honored my family. My work speaks a lot about my family through memories. Working in memory allows me to explore my cultural identity and the importance of family. For me, family is not only a mother and father, but those who have a bond between one another, who support, care, love, and respect one another.

By working in installation, I welcome the viewer to interact with my idea of history or to find a place for escape that sparks interests of past. I believe that the appearance of the hand has an aura. The presence of this aura is important to me.

My sister, mother and grandmother have inspired my love of the handmade with their sewing, crocheting, cooking, and painting. Others who have inspired me are my grandfather, a fisherman who crafted his boats and nets, and my father, who is a musician and composer.

I choose to work with materials like clay and fabric that contain life, warmth, care, importance, and love. Touch is important to me because it describes the emotions one has in memory. Both
materials have a prior existence that can translate when transformed into an object. By cherishing memories while using these materials integrating the past into the future and capturing memory into object, I am creating a new tradition.
